Butler and Trakas Families Surpass $5,000 Personal Goal

The Butler and Trakas families teamed up to raise $5,000 for Unite For The Cure and they have zoomed passed their personal goal, raising over $6,300 for Dr. Keirstead’s promising research! The Butlers and the Trakas families worked diligently and creatively, organizing multiple events, including a bake sale, a Mary Kay fundraiser, a weight loss challenge and even a drink-a-thon. Both the Butlers and Trakas families live in Florida and both have lost beautiful babies to SMA Type 1. We are so proud of you and we know your angels, Andy and Andrea, are, too!

The Butler/Trakas Families: Drinkathon

The Butler/Trakas team has taken fundraising for “Unite For The Cure” international! For her birthday on October 18, Eimear Butler organized a drinkathon at Thursty Nelly’s in Kaiserslautern, Germany, to benefit the cause, in honor of her nephew, Andy Butler. The event included live music and karaoke from Andy’s uncle, Ed Butler, and much more! A unique bottle of vodka was auctioned off for $320 alone, and the entire event raised $1215.34 for “Unite for the Cure.” Thank you so much to the thirsty folks who celebrated Eimear’s birthday with her and so generously supported our cause!

Butler & Trakas Families: Fight SMA with Mary Kay

The Butler and Trakas families joined together with Mary Kay cosmetics to help cure SMA. Here is what Audra had to say about it:

In July, my friend and Mary Kay consultant, Vicki Piccirilli, approached me with a fundraising idea.  If I would host a Mary Kay party with at least 10 of my friends and family members, then she would donate all proceeds from all sales at the party to FSMA in memory of our son, Andy, who lost his battle with Type I SMA in June.  And, so the  “Fight SMA with Mary Kay” fundraising initiative got its start!

We had our first party on August 14, and it was a huge success, raising $679.80 for our local chapter of FSMA.  At the party, each guest received a skin-care makeover and sampled make-up.  It was a great way for friends and family members to feel pampered – and raise awareness for SMA at the same time!

This month,  my mother hosted another Mary Kay party on September 14 in memory of Andy, and the Trakas family hosted one on September 18 in memory of their daughter Andrea, who also had Type I SMA.  We raised a total of $442.60 at both parties, which went directly to “Unite for the Cure.”  The profits for all follow-up sales from party attendees also will be donated. The Butler/Trakas Uniters are hoping to keep this great initiative going by hosting more parties soon!

What a great idea!

The Trakas Family, uniting for the cure!

The Trakas Family of Florida has teamed up with the Butler Family in uniting to collectively raise $100,000 by the end of November 2009 to cure SMA.

Why are the Trakas’ uniting for the cure?

When the Trakas’ second daughter, Andrea, was born, she  seemed to be perfectly healthy. When she was 7-weeks-old, they began to realize that she wasn’t holding up her head and moving around the way her older sister did at that age. After several months of tests, the dreaded diagnosis was confirmed: Type I SMA. SMA was not new to the Trakas’. Their best friends’ 15-year-old daughter has Type I SMA as well, and she has defied the odds with her tremendous strength, courage, and faith. It is still beyond their understanding how two lifelong friends could each have daughters born with the same genetic disease. Andrea was so happy and loved her 7  months of life and had an extraordinary impact on so many. There would be no greater joy for her family than for a cure to be found so that other parents would not have to endure the same difficult journey. The Trakas’ have been involved in many fundraising activities in support of SMA programs — long before Andrea was even born. One of their biggest and proudest accomplishments is the building of the “Andrea Trakas Memorial Playground” in the Tampa Bay area. This handicap accessible playground built in Andrea’s memory is a playground built “for all children”, and is state of the art. They know how many children will enjoy this facility for many years to come. The Trakas’ strongly believe in the potential that stem cell research has to treat and cure SMA, and they are honored to part of Unite for the Cure and partners with the Butler Family.
