What a wonderful story from the Felix family of Arizona. Their outreach effort snowballed into a generous Christmas act of kindness. Here is the story by Jaci Felix:
My husband works for UPS and he gave out letters to his co-workers asking for donations for UFTC. One of his co-workers is married to a realtor (Tammy Henderson) at Century 21 Northwest Realty in Glendale, AZ. The woman who owns that Century 21 (Rodica Bartels) also happens to own the house that we rent. Tammy and her husband donated $100 to the UFTC already, but Tammy also gave the letter to Rodica. In the very wonderful season of giving, the entire office decided instead of buying gifts for each other that they would chip in for Unite For The Cure. They collected an amazing $1350 for UFTC!! I was in shock and humbled. My husband and I are blown away by their generosity and so very appreciative.
This is truly wonderful. Thank you Felix family for sharing this act of kindness and thank you Rodica Bartels and Tammy Henderson for organizing such a thoughtful Christmas gift. Funding research to change the future of SMA is a true gift indeed.

The Felix family of Arizona had a donation made on their behalf with true, deep meaning attached to it — a donation in memory of their daughter Alexa’s great-grandmother, Edna Dahlstrom, who passed away on December 1, 2009.
In Jaci Felix’s words:
This donation is in memory of Alexa’s great-grandmother, Edna Dahlstrom (1/18/1920-12/1/2009). Edna passed away while Alexa was in the PICU a few weeks ago. My father’s (Roger Dahlstrom) co-workers from Banner Health all chipped in and wanted the money to be donated in memory of Edna to benefit SMA. Alexa never got to meet her great-grandmother due to both of them having health complications. Alexa has another Angel watching over her and all of her SMA friends. May Edna Rest In Peace.

The Felix family of Arizona organized a great fundraiser and it was a hit! Here is what Jaci Felix had to say about the fun night:
On Saturday October 10th, Noah and Mary White, friends of the family, graciously let us do a fundraiser for Unite for the Cure at their house. We had two very wonderful consultants come out, one from Pampered Chef (Kim Enriquez) and one from Gold Canyon Candles (Liz Wolcott). We raised $400 for Unite for the Cure and also raised awareness about SMA. We had a great time and appreciate all the supporters!
Way to go Felix family!

The Felix Family of Arizona has joined Unite For The Cure to collectively help raise $100,000 for Dr. Keirstead’s groundbreaking SMA stem cell program. Welcome aboard Felix Family!
Why are the Felix’ uniting for the cure?
Mike, Jaci, Amber (15), Jacob (3), and Alexa (22-months-old with SMA Type I) — Alexa came into this world on November 16th, 2007. A beautiful perfect baby girl. But from day one, Alexa has been fighting for her life. Not even 24-hours-old, she was taken to the NICU with severe jaundice and anemia. Doctors told Mike and Jaci Felix three days later that her organs were shutting down. No matter what they did, her bilirubin would not come down, and her anemia kept getting worse. They gave permission for her to have a total body blood exchange, a very risky procedure. The procedure was scheduled for the morning and they just prayed. The thought of losing their daughter was overwhelming. The prayers must have worked because one last blood check showed that her numbers were finally getting better. After several blood transfusions and lots of medicine, Alexa was finally ready to go home. The Felix’ thanked God for being so blessed.
Then just shy of turning 6-months-old, the Felix’ were told their daughter had SMA Type I, and the NICU stay at the beginning of her life was nothing compared to the fight she was facing now. They almost lost her once, and they are determined not to let that happen again! Since Alexa’s diagnosis, she has been hospitalized numerous times. The Felix’ feel so strongly that this stem cell program could one day help her, and so many others. Their daughter has had many obstacles in her life and she keeps overcoming them. She keeps showing them what a fighter she is, that she wants to be here. The Felix Family is going to fight right along side her. That is why it is so important to them to raise money for this wonderful cause.
